The best way to choose a travel guide

At start looking for a travel guide, can be a little disconcerting. There are actually many types of guide books, as there are types of travelers. Where do we begin to find the right one for you?

Traditional guides are the greatest portion of your portfolio ... and there are plenty of them. Usually contain lots of good information, some black and white maps, key areas to watch, and diagrams of important buildings. You 'll usually find some color photographs and maps also.

Think about where You 're going ....

Are you doing the Grand Tour of several counties in Europe? There are travel guides that cover the whole country, and some that cover entire continents.

Did you go alone to London and Paris? There are some books that cover only the cities or areas.

Some are combining two or three neighboring countries like Southeast Asia, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, all in one book.

Choose the guide that suits your journey. No need to carry that "the continent of Europe volume of" around for if all you 're already has a couple of cities. Two city guides Slim will do and be much easier to carry and transport.

Some books are much more visual than others. They tend to have lots of photos and less information. The information is good, just not as in depth as other guides. If 'Re taking a quick trip somewhere, the pictures can tell in an instant if something like what you want to see .... you 're really attractive. And if you 'sa quick trip, it is likely that Don ' t have time for lengthy detailed explanations anyway.

There a lot specialized guides. They won 't give general information, a lot, but if you have a special interest may be worthwhile to bring one long. You can find specialty books for bird watchers, or tasters. There are books that specialize in luxury restaurants.

There are whole books on the castles to stay in or luxury resorts. Guidelines for gardens or camping or great hiking trails. If you have a special interest in Wikipedia and online trips to visit the libraries ... You 'll probably find a guide to specialty in the field only the You ' re interested in

Digital guides are coming ... Well, some are already here. Publishers are still trying to figure out the best way to handle this. Some guides may download and read on your mobile phone ... but the small screen for eye strain when You 're trying to read a map or the small print on the descriptions.

You may get some in your laptop, but take your laptop all day will be a drag. You can download and print, but also could have a published guide.

Keep your eyes open for digital guides in the future, however. Once some of these pocket-sized reading devices easier to carry, you can download only the areas you want, the specialties you want, and link to GPS technology.

Never lost? I Don 't know. Sometimes half the fun of travel is getting lost and great experiences that you had 't wait.
