Royal Melbourne Golf Club (West Course) - Hole 5

The West Course at Golf Club Royal Melbourne it was the best rated golf course in Australia for the past 8 years. This is a course to rival the best in the world and owes his position to three factors important. The land on which the holes are played perfectly wonderful hilly and sandy nature of the land must have been a dream for construction managers greens and bunkers.

The clubs initial routing was amended by the great Scottish architect, Alister Mackenzie in 1926 and undoubtedly exploited the full potential land. Mackenzie was who came up with a blind drive over the hill in the fourth par-five which was not, in itself ideal, but opened the possibility of incorporating Vaccine second best in the field, down the hill to the green and followed with a pair of class three in the world, the fifth and sixth hole bright.

The third part of the equation is under rated genius Mick Morcom, curator Mackenzie clubs and the man charged with the task of bringing their ideas and plans to life. "Morcom," said Mackenzie, "was the best keeper I've worked with field.

Mackenzie ideals were that the genius of The Old Course at St Andrews, where the player had a multitude of options to consider before the club and both could be selected properly. He abhors the use of the herb as a means of punishing the wayward and seems confuse the golfer who enjoyed that faced the golf equivalent of a multiple-choice exam.

The best examples of this aspect of the design come in two of the biggest clubs holes.

The sixth hole is a dogleg a huge chunk of land, and clearly shows the advantages Mackenzie had at the Royal Melbourne tougher courses that influenced his extraordinary twelve weeks visit Australia in 1926, including Kingston Heath, Yarra Yarra and Victoria.

Verdict
The West Course can not be the most difficult in the country and many argue that it is the most "perfectly" conditioning. Nor has spectacular views of courses such as El Nacional Laguna docks or New South Wales Golf Club. What is, however, is our greatest feat of architecture and golf no matter how often you play, there's always another layer of subtlety to be discovered and a fascinating series of decisions to make.
