Behind the scenes-Golf Stories Uncovered
The Golf Book traces the impact of the game from its roots in the 15th century and celebrates the best players in the game, performances and breathtaking landscapes, from the hills of St. Andrews in Scotland to the cliffs of Pebble Beach.
Interspersed with rare photos of Bobby Jones, Walter Hagen, Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson and Francis Ouimet are equally impressive pictures of a grinning Richard Nixon right after he made a hole in one in Bel-Air Country Club in 1959, WC Fields with a fishing pole driver as Jack Nicklaus, behind the counter of Columbus, the largest of Nicklaus, Ohio, pharmacy, and Paula Creamer doing a cartwheel in front of Swilcan St. Andrews Bridge 2007 Ricoh Women's British Open.
The sport also lends itself to the descriptive narrative, the book captures the award-winning work Frank Deford, George Plimpton, Gary Smith, Dan Jenkins and others.
Three writers, photographers and four hits short competes in what it takes to capture a great picture or write a compelling story.
A man in his underwear
In this year's World Golf Championships-CA Championship at Doral Golf Resort and Spa in Miami, the photographer Kyle Auclair was in the right place at the right time, when Henrik Stenson shot began to strip off a water hazard:
"Stenson was two shots off the lead and Tiger (Woods) was in the group behind him. Everybody was following Tiger, so I wanted to get ahead of him and maybe throw something different. It was Thursday morning, so I did not want the same thing as everyone else. And it's hard to get something different when everyone is following the same group. So I went ahead and got lucky.
"I did not know Stenson was going to wear clothes. I thought he was joking, playing to the gallery. Then he took off his shirt and I thought this might be something big. Then he took his pants. And everybody laughed. And I was talking to me because I was the only photographer who was there and said, "Come on, man, do not take these pictures. I was playing with Ryuji Imada and Ben Curtis and incited me to take pictures. It took about 16 photos. "
The writer par excellence of Sports Illustrated
That's what Larry King asked Dan Jenkins. The Readers life born during the Depression, Jenkins has been enriched by his wit and humor in more than 500 articles in SI and more than 20 books, including Dead Solid Perfect, Semi-Tough: A Novel and Babe franchise. Although retired, he writes a monthly column for Golf Digest and even started to chirp in 2009.
"To write a great story that has to start by having in one winner has heard. The most famous of the most prestigious player that gives the event. It is much easier write about Jack Nicklaus (target = "_blank"> Golf Tips of Jack Nicklaus) than it is to write about someone you've never heard speak. It is easier to write about Tiger (Woods).
"We do not root for people, we identify with journalism. We are following stories. When he wrote for Sports Illustrated, which had to absorb the tournament for three or four days on Sunday night, I was on deadline and had to tell a story. Every day was important - but there was always a turning point. And then missing that defining moment of death. Have some experience. And it takes experience to make the things. It runs through cool and wonderful anecdotes, but if you do not follow the theme of the story, file it away and use them later.
"I I grew up in Texas and I grew up with golf and college football - those were the two most important things for Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson and Jimmy Demaret and Lee Trevino. If you do not like golf and college football as a child, you drown. I like both equally. Golf is great fun and it's beautiful and classy and elegant - but football college is important. People live and die with football in college. "
Shooting a tiger
Photographer Fred Vuich took two memorable photos of Tiger Woods - one of the hits from a bunker, surrounded by fans during the U.S. Open 2008 at Torrey Pines, and a cover photo of Bretton hit his tee shot on the 18th hole at Augusta in the Masters in 2001.
"Luck plays a lot in getting a great shot. The image of the tiger's bunker - Robert (Beck) was in place I would rather be in. I was late, so I took a point against Beck. And my angle was better.
"The image Tiger at Augusta was planned for Wednesday. So we planned on using a special camera. It was before digital. I was surprised to see the photo on the cover of magazine. That is the kind of life you have. The cover of Tiger was a painting. It is a camera without a motor unit. It was manual focus and a picture. "
