Thanksgiving Dinner Etiquette
The days of dining by waxing fruit from trees and roasting small animals over the fire, eating fingers, and maybe the fight with others over the remains are gone. Or are they?
More and more we swing our car through the drive-in, grab food from the window and go to eat with your fingers, so perhaps you need to brush up on the basics of formal - say "civilized" dining - Before the big Thanksgiving feast.
Civilized dining regulation evolved, since, according to Margaret Visser ("Rituals of Dinner") "The animals are slaughtered and consumed, the guest-host relationship is ... a complex of imposing the obligation and the suspension of hostilities, and the ordinary table knife is related to actual weapons of the war. "
Utensils were to be treated delicately, not alarm. For example, the knife not going to be held in the fist as a weapon, nor pointed threateningly at anyone, and the conversation was going to be soft, not provocation.
Now for a review of the basics of how to be a consummate Thanksgiving results.
1. Respect the time.
Arrive on time with a smile on his face and a plan to have a good time. Leave early. If you have not said, will have to use your EQ - your intuition. Watch the host (sui) to subtle cues - the most formal occasion, the more subtle signals, ie change of position in his chair, sighing, and speaking of "the big one day we have tomorrow. As you say you must leave, expect the protest, hoping to leave anyway. This is a "formality."
In our visits to the homes of others become more rare, the # 1 complaint seems to be hostesses that guests will not go home. One woman told me his guests arrived at noon and had to be discarded Finally, at 10 pm There is a meeting, that's a Ordela.
2. Wear your uniform. Do your job.
Yes, the guest has responsibilities. Dress properly and festive, and prepare to make him happy occasion. Please note "do." Not coincidentally, attendees must make it happen. Eat, drink and behave moderation.
3. When summoned, obey the summons.
As a public relations person long term, can not imagine how to appreciate the kind of "leader", when we say: "It's time to take a seat" goes to the dining room and beckons your friends to come along and when the hostess says, "We will retire to the lounge for coffee," does the same.
4. Observe protocol.
Age before range. "Special" would be the great-grandmother, then if you have invited to your boss, or there is a guest of honor. The most special person "is seated at the right "of the host and hostess, who sit at opposite ends of the table. If no card, it must ask," Where would like to sit? "
5. Once seated, stay awake!
Look to your hostess to lead. At this meal, even the most assigned to say a grace, for example. The hostess will indicate when to start passing things, and when she starts to eat, you can eat. Providing food for others - Start to pass the shared elements, salt and pepper (both), butter, cranberry sauce and salsa.
6. The passing of things.
If your dishes are served, then when someone asks for salt, pick up both the salt and pepper and place them next to the person next to you. Not passed from hand to hand, but seeks only Party may use them. Inefficient? Manners are not about efficiency.
7. Make conversation.
It is something active! In a smaller seat, may have a general conversation in a larger group, talk to people through you and on either side of you. If you are challenged conversation, working with his coach and arrive at a list of conversation-starters, ie, have you seen a great PBS special last night? What are your plans for Christmas this year? How was the traffic at the airport? What football team are encouraging? Start training young children. Help them find a list of things to talk about. I love it and feel included.
Your hostess will appreciate that keep the conversation going, spend some time with the timid or the octogenarian and help with awkward silences. At formal dinners, business lunches and other dining occasions traditionally when the food is served, everyone starts to eat and there is a silence. Someone has to "break the ice." This plan and be prepared with a confident and happy, "Sure is quiet when the food comes," or "Marcela, Where did you find fresh rocket in this time of year? "
8. What's with all the utensils and glasses?
The general rule is the work from the outside in. Go here to check: http://www.cuisinenet.com/digest/custom/etiquette/manners_intro.shtml
9. Beginnings and endings.
The napkin. When sitting, place your napkin on your lap. When finished, place utensils on the plate, not reject. Place the napkin slightly to the side of your plate.
10. Odds n 'Ends
Sitting up in his chair, not lean backwards. Do not rest your elbows on the table. It is permissible to bow hand slightly forward and rest your arm on the table. If you take medication, it is discreet and not mention either the fact that in others. Something in your mouth that will not? How is the output. Spit the olive pit in the palm and placed on the plate. Deposit the turkey bone back on the fork and place on plate.
What can you eat with your fingers? Artichokes, asparagus bearings, bacon, bread, biscuits, corn on the cob, potato chips, French fries, hors d'oeuvres, sandwiches, small fruit, berries and cheese into cubes. If in doubt, wait to see what your host.
And ... while it is important children learn etiquette, also is important to have fun. The sauce is out of the shirt when you wash it - or clothing plan which does not really matter.
