A fascinating history of our favorite drink - Coffee
The history of coffee - Nobody really knows how coffee originated, its origin is lost in legends around the world. However, a story often say that the history of coffee is credited with its discovery a century goat herd 16 hungry and his Ethiopian caregiver named Kaldi. Goats, tired of looking for greener pastures, began to peck sweet red berries from a bush strange and unknown. Unusual behavior soon followed, the herd became Friskies and started kicking his heels, saw the animated behavior, Kaldi decided to try berries. Soon after, he became restless as well. 1 Century
In the 1st century, Arab traders brought coffee from Arabia and cultivate the plant for the first time on plantations. They created a drink from the berries and called it "Qahwa" which literally translates as "that which prevents sleep"
15th Century
Around 1453, coffee was introduced to Constantinople by the Turks and the first coffee shop, Kiva Kan, opened in 1475.
16th Century
Jesuit missionaries then brought Arabica coffee beans in the country of Colombia. The volcanic soils of the Cordillera of the Andes, along with the mild temperatures and abundant rainfall in the topography of Colombia, provided the ideal conditions that allow the growth of coffee plants to flourish.
By late 1500, the first traders were selling coffee in Europe, thus introducing the new beverage in Western life. The Dutch planted coffee tropical colonies in Batavia and Java, while the French planted in Martinique in 1723 and later in the Antilles. The English, Spanish, and Portuguese did same in their own colonies.
Century 17
In 1607, coffee was thought to have been introduced to the 'New World' by Captain John Smith, the founder of Virginia.
In 1652, the cafeteria is open for the first time in England. Coffee houses multiply and become such forums popular intellectual debates that are called "Penny Universities" (a penny that the price of a cup of coffee).
In 1668, Edward coffee Lloyd's opens in England and is frequented by merchants and maritime insurance agents. Over time it becomes the Lloyd's of London, the best known company insurance in the world.
In 1672, the cafeteria was opened in Paris.
In 1675, the Turkish army surrounded Vienna. Kolschitzky Franz Georg, a Viennese who had lived in Turkey, slips through the enemy lines to lead relief forces to the city. The fleeing Turks leave sacks of "dry black fodder" that Kolschitzky recognizes as coffee. He stated that as his reward, and the first cafe opened in central Europe. Also establishing the habit of refining the beer by filtration of the reasons, sweeteners, and add a splash of milk.
With a coffee plant smuggled out of the Arab port of Mocha in 1690, the Dutch being the first to cultivate coffee and commercial transport in Ceylon and their East Indies colony - Java, BREW source alias.
Century 18
In 1713, King Louis XIV was presented with a coffee tree. It is believed that the additives of coffee was first used as an additive in coffee in his court.
1721: First coffee Opens in Berlin.

Century 19
The first espresso machine could have been invented in France in the beginning of the 19th century. However, the first manufactured machine is said to have occurred 100 years later in Italy.
In 1886, grocers Wholesale Joel Cheek names ex his popular coffee blend "Maxwell House," after the hotel in Nashville, TN in which he served.
Century 20
The 20th century saw a major evolution of coffeein how it was done and served.
- In 1900, Hills Bros. begins packing roasted coffee in vacuum tins, spelling the end of the ubiquitous local shops and mills of roasted coffee.
- In 1901, a Japanese-American chemist Satori Kato of Chicago, created the first soluble "instant" coffee.
- In 1903, a German coffee importer Ludwig Roselius and a research team perfected the process of removing the caffeine content of coffee beans without destroy the flavor. It is marketed under the brand name we still know today, "Sanka."
- In 1905 the first machine commercial espresso was made in Italy.
- In 1906, George Constant Washington, an English chemist living Guatemala, the ads are a condensation of dust in the peak of his silver coffee carafe. After experimentation, establishing the first mass produced coffee Instant (his brand is called Red E Coffee).
- In 1908 Melitta Bentz invented the first drip coffee world using blotting paper.
- In 1933 Dr. Ernest Illy developed the first automatic espresso machine.
- In 1938 Nescafé instant coffee was invented by the Swiss firm Nestle, the Brazilian government assistance in resolving its problem of excess coffee.
- In 1945 Achilles Gaggia perfected the espresso machine with a piston establishing a high pressure extraction to produce a thick layer of cream that we all love today.
- In 1971, Starbucks opened its first store in Pike Place Market in Seattle public, creating a frenzy of fresh roasted coffee beans.
- In 1979, Mr. Cappuccino opens for business.
- In 1991, the Caffè Carissimi Canada, a network of espresso service providers is formed in Canada, the model after a visit to Franco Carissimi (roaster and equipment manufacturer) in Bergamo Italy. It becomes the fastest growing network of private and independent providers of super automatic machines in Canada.
- In 1995, coffee is the most popular beverage in the world. More than 400 billion cups consumed each year. It is a global commodity that is second only to oil.
